Session Focus:
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age. (Matthew 28:19-20, NABRE)
These are the parting words Jesus speaks to His Apostles as He is about to ascend into Heaven. Here Jesus is giving the Church its great mission, its purpose, which includes Baptism as an essential part. What is striking about this command for Baptism is that Jesus tells us to be baptized not by invoking one name, but three names: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Why three? It is reasonable to think we can never fully understand why. Nonetheless, God gives us glimpses into this mystery. Because at the most fundamental level, the Trinity reveals that God Himself is a relationship. In 1938, Harvard University initiated a study on human health and happiness that spanned almost 80 years. The conclusion? The study revealed that relationships, above all other factors, were the most important ingredient in a person living a happy and healthy life. Is it all that surprising then, when God, from the very beginning, wants us to have relationships, too? In the book of Genesis, the Lord God said: It is not good for the man to be alone... (Genesis 2:18, NABRE)
Please join us on February 2 as we explore the essence of our great God: the relationship of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
